Acacous Mountain

This is one of the more fascinating and beautiful areas of Libya. The mountains of Jebel Acacus cover a vast area of Fezzan east of Ghat. They contain some of the world's best examples of cave art, some dating back 12,000 years. The scenes depict hunting, wild and domesticated animals, festivities and love making. They suggest there was a higher rainfall and more temperate climate here in the past.
The area appears like an extensive, high, sandstone plateaux that has been eroded away into hundreds of complex rock formations and wadis. Several waterholes can be seen in the wadis and many a day can be spent exploring this magnificent wilderness.
Acacus is one of the better areas for trekking in the deserts, shady wadis wind their way through magnificent rock scenery and some of the mountains may be scrambled up in a short time offering beautiful panoramas.
Wadi Tashwinat or Wadi Tashween, is one of the major wadis of the Acacus. It is about 60 kilometers long with numerous side wadis  to explore. It is popular not only for its scenery but for its concentration of caves with some of the best examples of Acacas cave carvings and paintings. It is likely that you will never encounter another Wadi of its kind.

Ghat

Ghat is known as the last oasis. After Ghat you enter the desert region of the Akakus containing miles and miles of sand and rock formations. The old town `The Medina’ of Ghat is more or less uninhabited today with only a few families remaining within the ruins. The old houses were built of terracotta bricks (dried under the scorching sun) and painted white using the limestone, abundantly found in this region. Its passageways and narrow streets resemble those of Ghadames, however in Ghat the sense of the Sahara is felt in the atmosphere.
